sfu student appreciation gala 2014

I’m really honour to be invited to Simon Fraser University’s 2nd Annual Outstanding Student Volunteer Appreciation Gala this year. The gala was held at Delta Burnaby Hotel and Conference Centre. Reception started at 5:30pm with refreshments and hors d’oeuvres. I did not arrive for reception but I heard crab cakes and quiche bites were served. We got seated at 6:30pm for the start of the program and dinner service started at 7:20pm.

The master of ceremonies of the evening was Mr. Martin Mroz, Director of SFU Health and Counselling Services. Martin is a hilarious man and made our evening very entertained.

I attended as a peer mentor for my faculty. Although I don’t think I deserve that much of a recognition for this particular position, I consider myself attending as a student volunteer/representative of my own department since I was working for the union for two full years. 😛 Student who were invited to the gala did a lot more than we mentors. And I truly think it was a nice gesture from SFU putting this together for them and us.

A lot of meaningful speeches were spoken on the evening. A theme revolving volunteering, a message to spread around. Volunteering is an engaging action. When we help one person, that one person will help another person, and it will continue on. Other than speeches, I must say there were quite a lot of selfies going on that night. All started with Martin saying “My mom never believes that I get invited to events like these.” And we got a group selfie while he was on the stage. Then SFU President Andrew Petter came up for his speech, started with another selfie with Martin. And it just went on from there.. Non-stop. 😛

FCAT peers are all fun people. How can we not have our own selfies? We managed to do an oscar selfie and name it the best selfie ever at SFU GALA.

Dinner service was buffet style. Trust me, every one of us tried to stuff ourselves with food like we starved for a 100 years. #FirstWorldProblems

For starters, we have mushroom creme soup, green and caesar salad.

For entrees, we have seasonal vegetables, wild mushroom ravioli with tomato cream sauce, braised beef in burgandy wine with caramelized pearl onions, and lemon olive oil roast potatoes with herbs and parmesan.

For dessert, we have various cakes, fruits, and cheese. (Most of my cake pictures were out of focus cause it was quite embarrassing when everyone is trying to fight for the cakes and I’m just trying to take pictures slowing down their process) My favourite was the New York cheesecake, red velvet cake, and chocolate cake. More flavours were available like mango, carrot, berry, apple, and more.

I only had one round of entree and one round of dessert. Very reasonable but I won’t deny I tried to stuff my plate pretty full. The food was really good. We are all very satisfied. 😛

Ending the night with a picture with our President Andrew Petter. My SFU life is complete now. I shall graduate soon! 😛
